The Rubber Bandits are set to stretch credulity with an alternative history of Ireland covering everything from Brian Boru's bad day at Clontarf to the Great Famine and the events of 1916.

The Limerick duo's The Rubber Bandits Guide to 1916 airs on RTÉ2 on New Year's Eve at 11.00pm and will see Blind Boy Boat Club and Mr Chrome bring viewers an irreverent crash course in Irish history, with a little help from Willie O’DJ and "some lads from the local takeaway and a goat".

It will be the first full show on RTÉ by the pair, who won huge acclaim at this year's Edinburgh Festival, and it is hoped that the new programme will lead to a series in which the duo will give their own take on key events in Irish history.

The Rubber Bandits Guide to 1916 was written by Blind Boy Boat Club and Mr Chrome along with James Cotter, who produced The Republic Of Telly and The Oliver Callan Show.

The Rubber Bandits rose to fame after their video for Horse Outside was featured on RTÉ2's The Republic Of Telly in 2011. The video has since been viewed nearly 14 million times on YouTube.
