Carol star Cate Blanchett is in talks about joining the cast of an upcoming Marvel superhero sequel.

US trade publication Variety says that the Oscar winner is eyeing a role opposite Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok.

If a deal is agreed, it would mark The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit star's first major role in the comic book universe.

Thor: Ragnarok will be directed by Taika Waititi; his other credits include What We Do in the Shadows, The Inbetweeners and Flight of the Conchords

The film will be released in November 2017.
 

Blanchett in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

On Thursday Blanchett was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her performance in Carol. Her co-star Rooney Mara, Room's Brie Larson, The Danish Girl's Alicia Vikander and Brooklyn's Saoirse Ronan complete the shortlist.

The Golden Globe awards take place on January 10, 2016.
