Saoirse Ronan has revealed that she was having her nails done in Dublin when her phone "started blowing up" to tell her she had been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in Irish romantic drama Brooklyn.

The actress said that she did not answer the phone the first few times and then told her publicist she could not talk because she was in the salon, Tropical Popical, with her mother and friend.

"Then she told me about the nomination. I wasn't expecting it," she admitted to the US film publication The Hollywood Reporter.

As luck would have it, her nails were being painted gold.

Ronan said that audiences' reactions to the John Crowley-directed film of the Colm Tóibín bestseller have been a source of great pride to her.

"So many of my friends and family have gone on a Tuesday night, when the cinemas are usually empty, but they've been full," she said.

"To know that people have really accepted it and given it so much love, not only in Ireland, but all over, is really special. I'm having a glass of champers that the girls in the salon just poured me."

Hopefully there'll be more celebratory drinks when the Golden Globes take place on Sunday January 10.

Ronan is shortlisted with Carol stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, Room's Brie Larson and The Danish Girl's Alicia Vikander for the Best Actress, Drama award.
