Ed Sheeran was the most discussed entertainer of the year on Facebook for 2015, with Game of Thrones leading the television chatter and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens the most talked about movie on the social networking site.

Facebook has released its annual Year In Review which rounds up the most talked about people, television shows and movies of the past year and there are only a couple of surprising entries overall.

Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift

In terms of individual people generating social media chatter, musicians dominated the list. Sheeran came out on top followed by his close friend Taylor Swift in second position. Kanye West came in at number three – we're sure the moment he announced his 2020 presidential run had something to do with this – and El Perdon hitmaker Nicky Jam nabbed the fourth spot.

Wiz Khalifa, Drake, Pitbull, Caitlyn Jenner, The Weeknd and Shakira rounded out the top ten.

Patrick Dempsey and Ellen Pompeo in Grey's Anatomy

In the telly world, it's no surprise that Game of Thrones was the most discussed TV show around the world as its ratings continue to grow with each season and twists and turns are perfect social media fodder. Fellow dramas The Walking Dead, Grey's Anatomy and Orange is the New Black also broke the top ten, with comedy shows The Daily Show, Saturday Night Live, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and The Simpsons also sparking debate.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits cinemas on December 17

The film section of the list was full of major franchises, sequels and biopics. The upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens topped the list – no surprises there – with Furious 7, Jurassic World, Avengers: Age of Ultron and American Sniper all making the top five.

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson in Fifty Shade of Grey

Straight Outta Compton, Fifty Shades of Grey, Mad Max: Fury Road, Magic Mike XXL and Pitch Perfect 2 completed the top ten.
