The real-life Torquay hotel that inspired John Cleese to write the legendary BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers is going to be demolished.

Developers have been given permission to convert the site of the Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay, Devon into a retirement home.

Cleese's classic sitcom character, snooty hotel owner Basil Fawlty, was based on the hotel's former owner Donald Sinclair.

"This is a great outcome for the iconic Gleneagles Hotel site and I look forward to seeing the new development taking shape," said councillor Mark King.

The three-star hotel will be knocked down and replaced by 21 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom apartments.

There will also be a guest suite and two communal lounges, though it seems unlikely that Manuel will be working there as a waiter.
