Cate Blanchett has revealed that she is a huge fan of John Crowley's film Brooklyn, adding that Saoirse Ronan is an "extraordinary actress".

Speaking to TEN, Blanchett, who is tipped for an Oscar nomination for her role in the upcoming romantic drama, Carol, praised Irish actress Saoirse Ronan, who has also been enjoying considerable Oscar buzz for her role in Brooklyn.

Blanchett said: "I've just seen Brooklyn, John Crowley has made the most extraordinary film and Saoirse is such an extraordinary actress".

The Oscar-winning actress also said that she would jump at the chance to come back to shoot in Ireland, or to take on a theatre role here.

"I would love to come back to Ireland, would love to be on stage in Ireland", she revealed.

Her latest movie, Carol hits Irish cinemas later this week, and co-stars Rooney Mara as a young store clerk in the 1950s who embarks on affair with an older married woman played by Blanchett.

The film, which is directed by Todd Haynes is an adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's landmark novel The Price of Salt and according to Blanchett "the novel was written in '51 and was revolutionary and still sort of seems revolutionary. In the sense that it was the first time that a lesbian love was written with a happy ending."

"The powerful thing about the movie that Todd Haynes has made with Carol is that, in the end, the takeout is that it's a love story. And the women's gender is a very very big impediment of course - it's set in the 50s - but it's not the only one," she said.

Carol is out in cinemas on November 27, watch TEN's interview with Blanchett by clicking on the video link.
