Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea, the adventure which includes Irish actors Brendan Gleeson, Sam Keeley and Cillian Murphy, will be released in Ireland on December 26.

The adventure epic which also includes Chris Hemsworth, Benjamin Walker, Ben Whishaw and Tom Holland among its cast, is based on Nathaniel Philbrick's best-selling book of the same name and tells the true story of the Essex, a whaling ship which was attacked by a whale 200 years ago today, and became the inspiration for Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick.

Studio Warner Bros has said the film "reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive".

Hemsworth plays first mate Owen Chase; Murphy plays second mate Matthew Joy; Whishaw portrays author Melville with Holland cast as young seaman Tom Nickerson and Gleeson playing the same character 30 years later.

In the Heart of the Sea will be released in Ireland on December 26. Its original US release was scheduled for March but was then postponed until December so that the film would be more prominent during awards season.
