This boy may have been cracking up and have broken down, but after an absence of several weeks the statue of rock star Phil Lynott has returned to Dublin city centre after being taken away for repairs following a road accident.

The 2.4 metre bronze statue of the Thin Lizzy frontman was accidentally damaged by a motorist at Harry Street, off Grafton Street back in September.

At the time TEN reported that the fretboard of the guitar has been snapped just above the neck joint and several of the strings have been bent out of shape.

The motorist came forward and contacted the authorities to let them know what had happened after the unfortunate accident. Phil's mother Philomena said she was delighted that the motorist in question has taken responsibility.

It's the second time the famous rocker's statue required repairs. In 2013 it was removed when it was damaged after being knocked off its plinth by vandals.

A Dublin City Council spokesman today confirmed the statue has now been returned to its rightful place at Harry Street. The Phil Lynott statue has become a Dublin landmark since its unveiling in 2005.
