2FM breakfast presenter Keith Walsh has admitted was nervous but excited about his Reality Bites feature The Gun Show which airs on TV this week.

The Breakfast Republic host's journey to gain a six pack was documented for an episode of the series and he also explored the culture of supplements and the psychology behind the people whose mission in life is to eat clean and train mean.

Signing up for such a strict regimen came with instant regret, followed by a lot of powering through.

"I think I always feel like that when I do anything, I think everybody does, it's a good idea 'til you get into it and it's really about getting passed that feeling and pushing through," Keith told RTÉ TEN. "I'm not blowing my own trumpet but it's not an easy thing to do and if it was easy, then everyone would be doing it."

He added that the decision stemmed from a promise he made to himself to say yes to more opportunities.

"I kind of made the decision personally to start saying yes to more things and making myself available to new experiences to get out of my own comfort zones. So I said yes, then immediately regretted it, but once you say yes it's actually harder to back out of it than to just go through with", he said.

While many people would find giving up their favourite treats the hardest part of a training routine, Keith only had a few things he really missed – beer and chips.

"The only think I really missed was a few beers, a few bottles of beer at home on a Friday evening. And I love chips. It was stupid little things like that, there was nothing else really, I'm not a fan of Chinese takeaways or pizza really, so there was nothing I was craving," he added.

After the programme was finished, there was no big pig-out session for the DJ but his eating habits have definitely changed, "I'm just more aware of what I'm eating. I wouldn't be going back to getting big breakfast rolls because now I know what's in it. I used to eat loads of sausages, I'd eat sausages all day and I won't ever eat them again now. Once you learn what's in stuff you kind of go, 'Jesus, it can't be good' and I was to live forever so."
