One Direction singer Niall Horan makes a cameo appearance in Career of Evil, the new thriller which Harry Potter author JK Rowling has published under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.

The latest book in Rowling/Galbraith's Cormoran Strike series follows the hunt for a serial killer. Horan is included as the imaginary boyfriend of a murdered girl, Kelsey, in the story.

In the book, detective Strike interviews Kelsey's friend Hazel and asks her about the late girl's boyfriend.

Strike then finds himself at a loss when Hazel starts talking about One Direction.

"The band," she says. "They're a band that came third on The X Factor. She's obsessed - she was obsessed - and Niall was her favourite.

"So when she says she's met a boy called Niall and he's eighteen and he's got a motorbike, I mean, what were we supposed to think?"

Career of Evil, the third novel in the Strike series, was published at the end of October. One Direction's new album, Made in the AM, is released this Friday, November 13.
