Grand Designs: House of the Year

9.00pm Channel 4

Every year the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) holds a competition to find the best new home in Britain and this time, Grand Designs is along for the ride. Presented by Kevin McCloud (pictured below), the four-part series explores some of Britain’s most contemporary and cutting edge homes, all of them in the running for the prestigious Riba House of the Year Award 2015. In this first episode, Kevin McCloud visits five homes built for country living. The dwellings include a house disguised as a giant shard of flint, a timber farmhouse in Somerset, a low budget home made of shipping containers in Northern Ireland – this construction, incidentally, featured on Grand Designs last year; an eco house in Cambridgeshire, and a modern glass villa with an impressive, sierra-like jagged roof. Discover tonight which of the five will make it through to the final shortlist and the ultimate accolade Riba: House of the Year 2015.

Prime Time and BBC NI’s Nolan Live series come together to reveal the results of a specially commissioned survey, which has asked 2,000 people across the island a range of questions on social, economic and constitutional issues. The people surveyed were asked if they would like to see the island united, and the results for that one will be keenly watched, as the centenary of the 1916 Rising approaches. The presenters are Miriam O’Callaghan and Stephen Nolan (pictured below.)
