Caitriona Balfe, the Irish star of the hit time travel romantic drama Outlander, is among the nominees for the People's Choice Awards in the US.

The Monaghan actress has been shortlisted alongside Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), Ginnifer Goodwin (Once Upon a Time), Jennifer Morrison (Once Upon a Time) and Lady Gaga (American Horror Story) in the Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress category.

Balfe's co-star, Sam Heughan¸ is nominated in the corresponding male category and Outlander is also up for the overall Sci-Fi/Fantasy show award.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles on Wednesday January 6. Avengers: Age of Ultron leads the shortlist with seven nominations.

Earlier this year, Balfe was named Best Actress in key US magazine Entertainment Weekly's EWwy Awards and also won at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films' Saturn Awards for her performance in Outlander.

Based on Diana Gabaldon's best-selling books, Outlander's first season saw married combat nurse Claire Randall (Balfe) transported from 1945 back to 1743, where she married Scottish warrior Jamie Fraser (Heughan).

Season two, in which the now-pregnant Claire and her husband are in 18th-century France, is due to premiere in 2016.
