Alan Hughes left his long-term partner Karl Broderick "gobsmacked" this morning when he proposed to him live on air on TV3's Ireland AM.
The TV host and Broderick were talking to Sinead Desmond and Mark Cagney on Ireland AM this morning during a special feature on same-sex marriage and how things have changed in Ireland over the past 20 years, when Hughes took Broderick by surprise by going down on one knee and proposing.
Broderick joyfully accepted his proposal.
He said Yes!!!
Speaking to TEN, Hughes said he felt it was the "perfect time" to propose to Karl as the Marriage Bill was signed into law this week.
He said: "I'm really happy not only for us but for marriage equality and gay people in general that this week has finally come. It seems so long since the referendum and finally it's come into law, now people can finally be married."
The couple, who've been together for 22 years, entered into a civil partnership in 2011 at Dublin's Unitarian Church, followed by a party in the Mansion House.
Hughes said that Broderick proposed to him when he won Celebrity Salon, decorating their house with candles and flowers, so the bar was set high for proposals.
The TV3 host said Ireland AM has been his TV family for the past 16 years, so it was "the right place to be this morning for the week that was in it".
And what are their plans to celebrate? Hughes said: "We're going to a little coffee shop near our home to have scrambled eggs and toast", joking that that was about as glamorous as it will get.
This week, the Marriage Bill was signed into law, legalising same sex marriage after the referendum in May.
