Lewis stars Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox have decided that their new whodunit, What Lies Tangled, will be the last.
ITV confirmed the news on Monday, ahead of the premiere of the two-parter on Tuesday November 3.
The mystery, which concludes on November 10, marks the end of Whately's 28-year association with the role of Lewis, having first played the detective opposite John Thaw in Inspector Morse in 1987.
Fittingly, both series consisted of 33 episodes.
Whately said he felt "incredibly fortunate" to have worked with co-star Fox and the rest of the cast and crew, and he thanked the fans for their support.
"What a ride it has been," he said.
"I will really miss hanging out with Kev for half the year," added Fox. "I am, however, fairly confident that he will not miss my flawless Geordie accent between takes."
What Lies Tangled sees Lewis and Hathaway (Fox) investigating a parcel bombing, with the Inspector also trying to save his career and relationship.
"We owe Kevin a huge debt of gratitude for nearly 30 fantastic years of Morse and Lewis, and, of course, many thanks too to Laurence Fox who has been by Kevin's side for the last 10 years," said ITV's Director of Drama, Steve November.
"We respect their decision not to continue into a further series and wish them the very best for whatever comes next."
