Liam Payne has confessed that the boyband need a break after five years on the road together as they are all 'a mess'.

One Direction wrapped up their On The Road Again World Tour on Saturday in Sheffield, England. This was their last concert ahead of what they are calling 'an extended break'.

The tour began in February in Australia around the same time as Zayn Malik quit the group. While Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne carried on regardless, the lads are now admitting his departure took quite a toll on them.

Speaking to The Sunday Times magazine Payne said: "Basically we're all a mess. None of us ever get enough sleep. It's intense, but you've got to be grateful for that. You've got to be grateful there are people screaming for you standing outside your hotel room."

Also speaking about their much needed break Horan said: "We’ve had five years of craziness. Now we all need to go away, become mad old recluses, then come back again with giant beards."

The group are adamant that this is not the end of One Direction and Payne insisted that they "are not going anywhere."

He added: "In five years we've done four tours, five albums, we've done films. I've not even watched our films because we are always running to the next thing.

"We can't even answer questions properly because stuff hasn't sunk in. I just want to sit still and let it sink in. We just want a little break."
