Irish Bake Off says goodbye to first contestant

Eleven contestants will compete next week
Eleven contestants will compete next week

The first contestant has headed home to their own kitchen on the new series of TV3's The Great Irish Bake Off

IT tutor and mother-of-three Sandra McGarry from Navan, Co Meath did not progress to the second episode from Dessert Week after both her Signature and Technical Bakes went awry.

McGarry made a Blackberry and White Chocolate Trifle Cake for her Signature Bake and wanted the dessert to have "a wobble".

Unfortunately, gravity triumphed while the cake was in the fridge waiting for judges Paul Kelly and Lily Higgins' assessment, and McGarry had to scramble to reassemble her creation.

Pastry chef Kelly did however say that the cake looked delicious and moist and described the sponge as "spot on".

In the first Technical Challenge of the new series, the contestants were asked to bake three exotic cheesecakes as per Kelly's recipe. He and Higgins then tasted the results without knowing the identities of the bakers.

In McGarry's finished dessert Kelly highlighted the cakes' inconsistency, thick base and uneven distribution of the cheesecake, while author and food blogger Higgins complimented her on the passion fruit taste.

The Technical Challenge

McGarry ranked 11th out of the 12 contestants for the Technical Challenge and was soon told by presenter Anna Nolan that the judges had decided her time on the show was up.

Speaking after her elimination, she said: "Someone has to leave in the first round. My bakes weren't great. I definitely can bake; I just didn't get to prove it on the show."

Higgins said: "Sadly, Sandra is going home. Her Signature Bake didn't work out and she had a chance to pull it all back with the Technical but unfortunately it wasn't to be."

Kelly described McGarry as "a great fighter". "I hope she really continues to bake, practise and become better and better," he added.

The first Star Baker of the new series was Fíonnadh McGonigle from Co Monaghan.

Next week is Cake Week on the show.
