HBO have confirmed the death of a major character from Game of Thrones, whose death was left in question after last season's finale. Spoiler alert!
The final episode from the fifth season of Game of Thrones raised more questions than it answered – mostly to do with the fate of a number of key characters.
While Jon Snow's future has been speculated on constantly since the finale aired in June, a question mark was also left over the presumably dead Stannis Baratheon.
Stannis' (Stephen Dillane) was last seen on screen about to be killed by Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), but because the death happened off-screen, and Game of Thrones isn't known for shying away from violence, many fans of the series had wondered if she had actually gone through with it.
We now have confirmation from HBO that she did, in fact, slay the one true king of Westeros (if you're going by the honourable Ned Stark's logic of course), making good on her vow to avenge his younger brother Renly's murder.
HBO's new book Game of Thrones: The Noble Houses of Westeros Seasons 1-5 features a passage on Stannis and the final line reads, "Stannis was killed outside of Winterfell by Brienne of Tarth, who wished to avenge Renly's death."
As for the fate of our beloved Jon Snow? Well, we can still hold out hope on that count.
