TV3 has today announced that Alan Cantwell is returning to TV3 to host their main evening news.

One of the channel's original news readers, he will return from Wednesday October 28 to front the recently launched main evening TV3 News at 8.

Cantwell was one of TV3’s first employees when the station launched in 1998 and worked with the news team as a station anchor until 2012 when he decided to leave and work on other projects.

This move comes just weeks after Cantwell was reported to be joining UTV Ireland to replace Chris Donoghue, the channel's departing news anchor.

On his return to Ballymount Alan Cantwell said: "It's great to be back with TV3 News, particularly to be part of the main evening news at 8pm. I’m looking forward to covering the general election and witnessing the next phase of TV3’s evolution under the ownership of Virgin Media."

TV3 Group Director of News and Public Affairs, Andrew Hanlon, said: "I am delighted that Alan has decided to come back to TV3. He is a highly experienced newsman who brings a wealth of current affairs knowledge and on-screen presence to our increasingly popular nightly news broadcast."
