The Boomtown Rats are to make a new album, a full thirty years since their last release.

Fresh from slaying the crowd at Electric Picnic this summer, the chart-topping Irish punks say they're back in the studio for the first time since their last album, 1984's In The Long Grass

Speaking to the Irish Sun, Rats' guitarist Garry Roberts said: “I can’t quite believe it but Bob [Geldof] loves playing the old material so much, he now wants some new Rats' songs, so we’re going into the studio to record them.

“We’ve enjoyed the business of getting back up on the stage with Bob as much as he has. He’s a great guy who has been through so much.”

However, Roberts added that the reunion of The Boomtown Rats got off to a bad start because Geldof was not happy with rehearsals. “For the first hour we were terrible. Someone said ‘Stop’, so we had a break. And we went back afterwards, somewhat ruefully, as we thought it was over, and something happened. Garry attacked his guitar, and we did Lookin’ After Number One. And we were ferocious.”

The band scored 11 top 20 hits in Ireland and 12 Top 40 hits in the UK during their first run between 1977 and 1984.

The Boomtown Rats play the Olympia Theatre, Dublin on December 6.
