Irish comedian Joanne McNally has been named as the new co-host of RTÉ2's show The Republic of Telly

The 31-year-old Roscommon native is best known for touring the country with funnyman PJ Gallagher as part of his hit stage show Separated at Birth and is a regular on the airwaves with a weekly agony aunt slot on 2FM’s The Chris and Ciara Show. She was one of the stars in the one-off comedy programme The Commute which was broadcast on RTE2

The Republic of Telly is Ireland's longest-running TV comedy show and returns on Monday, October 19.

In the first show, Kevin breaks in his rookie partner in `TV Licence Inspectors 2', which sees Kevin coming out of retirement when the TV licence payments grind to a halt.

And when the new girl needs advice on how to bake the perfect bun, she turns to a comedy legend, who takes on the role of Hannibal Lecter to Joanne’s Agent Starling in ‘Silence of the Buns'.

Earlier this year, Jennifer Maguire announced that she was taking an extended break from The Republic of Telly.

The 33-year-old broadcaster, who has been a staple of the popular RTÉ2 show for the past seven years, said she's in no hurry to make a comeback.

She was absent for most of the last season of the comedy as she was busy giving birth to her first child, Florence, and  previouslyconfirmed that she's decided to extend the break.

"The show is back but I won't be," she said. "I've done it for seven years. It was very hard to say it, it was a very tough decision, but I won't be back for this season."

Maguire added that she made the decision to extend her absence in order to focus on a new sitcom, Bridget and Eamon, which is based on a sketch featured regularly on Republic of Telly.
