David Bowie has unveiled Blackstar, the new original song which features in the opening credits to Sky Atlantic's upcoming new drama The Last Panthers.
This is Bowie's first original music for film or television since 1993's The Buddha of Suburbia, the BBC's adaptation of the Hanif Kureishi novel.
The Last Panthers will air on Sky Atlantic in November. It is six episodes long and stars John Hurt, Samantha Morton, Tahar Rahim, and Goran Bogdan. The drama is set to open 'with a daring diamond heist before delving into the dark heart of Europe where a shadowy alliance of gangsters and 'banksters' now rule.
Bowie's work on the project started following a meeting between Bowie and the director of the series Johan Renck, who met during the making of the show.
“I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God," Renck said. "His first response was precise, engaged and curious. The piece of music he laid before us embodied every aspect of our characters and the series itself - dark, brooding, beautiful and sentimental (in the best possible incarnation of this word).
"All along, the man inspired and intrigued me and as the process passed, I was overwhelmed with his generosity. I still can't fathom what actually happened . . . "
