Ridley Scott's space saga The Martian is threatening to break box office record in the US for best October opening weekend.

The Matt Damon movie launched with an impressive $18 million at the box office on Friday, which means that it's on course for a $50 million-plus gross for its first weekend.

That would give it a chance of overtaking the $55.8 million debut of Gravity on this weekend two years ago, which is the biggest ever achieved in October.

The Alfonso Cuaron-directed movie, another space tale, took in $17.4 million on its first Friday.

The Martian, which went on general release here this weekend, has been receiving many rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic and here's ours.
