Coronation Street have released an official family portrait of the Connors family featuring Weatherfield's latest residents including actors Richard Hawley and Faye Brookes.

60-year-old Richard Hawley, who starred as DI Richard Haskins in Prime Suspect, plays Johnny, the "funny, charming and ruthless" patriarch of the Connor family, with stage actress Faye Brookes cast as his daughter Kate.

The pair join singer and former X Factor winner Shayne Ward, who made his screen debut as son Aidan in August.

Kate and Aidan are distant cousins of Michelle Connor, played by Kym Marsh, and the family grew up on the same estate as Carla (Alison King), who married into the Connors.

The Bill actress Rhea Bailey has been cast as Kate's soldier fiancee Caz, and will appear on screens in November.

Brookes, who is dating pop star Gareth Gates, has spoken about playing out the lesbian relationship, telling Digital Spy website: "It's a challenge. I didn't want to pigeonhole her into playing a stereotype."

The actress's screen sibling Ward has also teased there will be "a lot of fireworks" with the new cast additions.

"We are a force to be reckoned with. It's been a while since there has been a big Connor unit, but now I've come into it, then my dad and sister, so it's a pretty fun time for the Connors," he told UTV.

Hawley and Brookes make their Coronation Street debut on October 5.
