Colin Murphy, the writer behind the acclaimed play Guaranteed! is back with another look at the Irish banking crisis with Bailed Out! and he has assured audiences that there will be plenty of laughs to lighten the mood at this year's Theatre Festival.
Based on official accounts and off-the-record interviews, Bailed Out! tells the story of how Ireland "fell into the jaws of the Troika" in 2010, one of the darkest chapters in the history of the Irish state.
Colin's brother is well known Love/Hate actor Killian Scott (Scott is a stage name) though his other sibling, Fine Gael TD, Eoghan Murphy is equally as recognisable in particular from his work on the recent Oireachtas Banking Inquiry which looked at many of the events leading up the Irish bailout.
Speaking with RTÉ TEN during the play's final run-through, Colin didn't divulge whether he received any insights through his political connections.
However he assured us that while the play deals with very heavy subject matter, there will be some laughs thrown in the mix to keep the mood light.
"There's two kinds of comedy in it, there's quite a lot of slapstick because some of the events that were happening in government building were ridiculous, there's also a lot of black humour", he said.
"This is humour that there's a note of empathy for the people on stage, who are undergoing these events at the time. It's just the nature of us, as humans, that we get some relish, some dark delight, in watching people on stage go through difficult times when they don't know what's ahead of them, but we do know."
Bailed Out! which is directed by Conall Morrison will premiere as part of Festival on Tour in the Dublin Theatre Festival 2015 and opens at the Pavillion in Dun Laoghaire on Saturday until October 4.
