As Mad Men bows out, Jon Hamm finally, finally wins the Emmy for Lead Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of Don Draper in the acclaimed period drama.

After being nominated a whopping eight times Jon Hamm picked up the gong for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at this year's Emmy Awards. During his speech Hamm was gracious thanking "families who have chosen, for some reason, to take me in and be nice to me along this strange, strange road."

Backstage he told reporters: "I was very surprised. I really don't remember anything that I said.

"It was a very odd experience because after I made my hilarious joke of climbing on to the stage the way I did I realised people were clapping for me.

"Over the many years we have been here, this is the culmination of this wonderful feeling."

Emmy history was made at this year as How to Get Away with Murder star Viola Davis became the first African-American woman to win the award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series. Collecting her trophy Davis said: "The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are not there. So here's to all the writers, the awesome people, people who have redefined what it is to be beautiful and sexy and black."

Mom star Alison Janney won - again - in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category. It's her seventh win. Only Cloris Leachman, with eight, has won more often. The actress who play Bonnie Plunkett on the show admitted she felt like luck was on her side. "There were eight of us in this category so I feel like I won the lottery."

Amy Schumer picked up the Emmy for Best Variety Sketch Series for her show Inside Amy and had plenty of people to thank, including her make-up artist. "I knew I should have written something down. Thanks to everyone who helped me and the girl who gave me sort of a smoky eye, I really love it."

Uzo Aduba, who picked up the award for Best Supporting-Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Crazy Eyes in Orange is the New Black, was overwhelmed as she picked up her statuette telling the audience that she was "so thankful to stand beside a set of artists who are so brilliant, I love you mostly because you let me be me."

Game of Thrones was the big winner on the night scooping a very impressive 12 awards including the coveted Best Drama Series. Peter Dinklage who plays Tyrion Lannister on the hit show was awarded the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series honour. After embracing his co-star Lena Heady (Cersei Lannister) he told the star-studded crowd, "I was chewing gum, I wasn't prepared because the other actors in my category awe me with their performances."

It was not a good night for The Good Wife however. With Christine Baranski's and Alan Cummings' losses, this is the first time the show has not won an acting award since it premiered.
