UK police have dropped one of the three investigations into allegations of sex abuse by singer Sir Cliff Richard, according to a report in The Sunday Times.

The paper quotes an unnamed friend of Richard who says said the inquiry has foundered because South Yorkshire police have been unable to find evidence to substantiate the claims.

The Sunday Times says that the millionaire singer was understood to have provided evidence to police that he was never alone with two men who allege that he assaulted them in separate incidents in the 1980s.

Richard has not been arrested of charged in connection with the allegations and South Yorkshire police said they “won’t be providing a running commentary on the investigation. The inquiry continues and inquiries are ongoing”.

The singer, who has sold nearly 250 million records in his 56-year career, plays the 3,000 seater INEC in Kerry this Saturday and he is currently preparing for a UK concert tour to mark his 75th birthday. The tour will end in a five-night run at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
