Jenna Coleman has confirmed that she will exit Doctor Who during the upcoming season.

The star, who has played Clara Oswald on the series for the last three years, has confirmed this morning to BBC Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw that she will depart the show during its next run.

"I have left the TARDIS, I have, it’s happened. I’ve filmed my last scenes. It was emotional. It’s been in the works for a very long time," she said. "Steven [Moffat] and I sat down a year ago and tried to work out the best way to do it. It will happen at some point this season. Hopefully people will love it."

It is thought that the 29-year-old star's final scenes will air before the Christmas Special.

She added that she will miss working on the hit show, "There’s not a lot of jobs where you have a space ship, an alien as your best mate and get to run away from monsters. It’s so much fun, I love it. It’s such a unique beast. It’s been really special."

Coleman is currently the longest-serving assistant to the Doctor having starred alongside both Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi on their adventures as the time lord.

The new series of Doctor Who returns to BBC One on September 19.
