Jonathan Rhys Meyers has landed the leading role in the new Himalayan survival drama Shambhala.
The Dublin-born actor has been cast in the feature film from up-and-coming Australian director Summer Nicks, who has also written the script.
He will play the lone survivor of a plane crash in the Hindu Kush mountain range in Northern Pakistan. He suffers from amnesia and must struggle to stay alive in an unfamiliar, remote land.
It's the latest in a string of strong roles for the actor. Meyers also stars in the gay rights drama Stonewall which will debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 18 and upcoming cold war spy thriller Damascus Cover alongside John Hurt.
The producer Xeitgeist Entertainment Group said of Meyers: "We've got a really sensitive, intelligent actor in Rhys Meyer. With all the problems he's faced, what the press said about his troubles, we can definitely work with this guy. We're backing Jonathan."
Shambhala is set to begin shooting this autumn.
