US cable network AMC has given the green light to a full series of Preacher, the comic book adaptation which stars Mamma Mia!'s Dominic Cooper and Love/Hate actress Ruth Negga.

The 10-episode first season will premiere on AMC in the middle of 2016.

The show's executive producer, actor Seth Rogen, first shared the news of AMC's decision on Twitter, writing: "Preacher is coming to AMC... The beginning is nigh!"

Based on writer Garth Ennis and illustrator Steve Dillon's cult comic, Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer (Cooper), a Texan preacher who becomes possessed by a supernatural creature.

Joining him on his adventures are his ex-girlfriend, criminal crack-shot Tulip (Negga), and Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun).

The trio embark on a journey to find God and hold him accountable for "abandoning mankind".

Joel Stillerman, President of Original Programming and Development for AMC and SundanceTV, said: "Garth Ennis' Preacher is, above all, about great characters – something we look for in all of our series. The fact that it is also darkly funny, has some great supernatural elements, and takes us on an incredible adventure is just the icing on the cake."

Rogen developed the series with his production partner Evan Goldberg, who also directed This is the End and The Interview. Goldberg directed the pilot and will also work as an executive producer alongside Rogen.

Sam Catlin, who was a writer and co-executive producer on AMC's Breaking Bad, wrote the script for the pilot and will serve as showrunner.
