Kate Hudson has joined the cast of Jack Black's Kung Fu Panda 3 to replace Rebel Wilson, who was forced to quit the film.

The Australian actress was originally due to voice Mei Mei, described as "a crazy ribbon-dancing panda who is romantically obsessed with Po", in the upcoming sequel, but the role will now be taken over by Hudson.

The former Glee actress was drafted in to voice the role after the production schedule was extended, which meant that Wilson could no longer commit to the part.

And it's not just a case of merely overdubbing Hudson's voice, as any previously completed scenes will also be re-animated to reflect Hudson's take on the character.

Kung Fu Panda 3 will see Black return as fabled Dragon Warrior Po as he is tasked with training a host of Kung Fu Pandas to face down a supernatural villain sweeping across China.

Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu and David Cross will also return, while Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston and Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen join Hudson as new additions to the franchise's cast.
