X-Men star Nicholas Hoult is set to play author J.D. Salinger in an upcoming drama about the birth of the writer's classic novel The Catcher in the Rye.

Danny Strong (The Butler, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay) will direct the drama from a screenplay he adapted from Kenneth Slawenski's biography J.D. Salinger: A Life.

It will tell the story of the origins of Salinger's classic novel The Catcher in the Rye, which was published to widespread acclaim in 1951.

The success of the book and led to Salinger becoming more reclusive as he shied away from his newfound fame.

Hoult can next be seen in the sci-fi frama Equals opposite Kristen Stewart and X-Men: Apocalypse.
