Van Morrison fans were blown away by his two concerts in Cyprus Avenue, Belfast on Monday.

The legendary Northern Irish singer-songwriter performed two gigs to mark his 70th birthday, one of which took place at 3pm, while the second gig kicked off at 6pm.

The concerts were rather fittingly held on the east Belfast street he immortalised in his masterpiece record Astral Weeks.

Fans travelled from across the world to see Van the Man in action, including British actors Robert Pattinson, Tom Sturridge, Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall and celebrity chef Rick Stein who tweeted his excitement ahead of the gig.

According to Twitter, the first gig went down a storm, with various commenters among the 3,000 attendees saying he hasn't played this well in "years", that he sounded "amazing" and that the gig was "honey for the ears".

Despite the heavens opening for a deluge of rain at the start of the 3pm show, the fan's spirits couldn't be dampened, and they gave the six-time Grammy Award-winner a standing ovation. Opening songs included his classics Moondance, Brown Eyed Girl and Baby Please Don't Go.

It was a particularly poignant event for the singer, as he was born just a short distance away at 125 Hyndford Street on 31 August, 1945.

A brass plaque marks the house he shared with his mother Violet and his father George, who worked as an electrician at the nearby Harland and Wolff shipyard.
