Among the first night highlights of the Rose of Tralee were a recitation of the 32 counties in ten seconds, a rousing rendition of Guns n' Roses' Sweet Child of Mine, a rather colourful live science experiment, and some dung spitting.

The following 18 Roses took part in the first round of this year's Rose contest: London Rose Aisling Hillary, Kerry Rose Julett Cullotty, Cork Rose Aoife Murphy, Southern California Rose Lauren Waller, Wicklow Rose Megan Swart, Melbourne Rose Joy Kerrigan, Meath Rose Elysha Brennan, Kentucky Rose Emily Hughes, South Australia Rose Chelsea Thursby Milovanovick.

Boston and New England Rose Sarah Hogan, Perth Rose Denise Lynch, Monaghan Rose Michelle Caulfield, Longford Rose Daphne Howard, Dubai Rose Marie Ryan, Western Canada Rose Cassandra Sampson, Darwin Rose Caitriona Brennan, New Zealand Rose Maggie Fea, and Derry Rose, Eimear Anderson.

Kerryman Shane Kenny was named Rose Escort of the Year.
