Sharon Stone has revealed how her life changed after she suffered a stroke in 2001.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar magazine the 57-year-old actress said that she eventually checked into hospital after several days of feeling unwell.

"When I came to, the doctor was leaning over me," she recalled. "I said, 'Am I dying?' And he said, 'You're bleeding into your brain.' I said, 'I should call my mom,' and he said, 'You're right. You could lose the ability to speak soon.'"

Stone suffered searing pain because of a ruptured vertebral artery. She had no feeling in her left leg for months, and her vision was so poor that she could not even read.

The Basic Instinct star returned to acting in 2003, but became disillusioned and recalls a particular low after her guest appearance on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 2010.

"That was humiliating," Stone admits. "Having worked with the finest people in the industry, I was like, 'Wow, I'm really at the back of the line here. I'm wearing L'eggs pantyhose, and in makeup they start out by putting this white primer on my face.' I'm like, 'This is so bad. What did I do to deserve this?'"
