Uggie, the world's most famous cinematic canine and star of Oscar winner The Artist has sadly passed away aged 13 after an illness.

The Jack Russel terrier won the hearts of millions with his playful antics in The Artist and Water for Elephants alongside Robert Pattison.

In fact such was the impression he made in the 2011 Oscar winning film that a 'Consider Uggie' campaign was launched to give him an honorary Oscar. However he later went on to win Palm Dog Award at the Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the movie.

A year later he became the first canine actor to have his paws imprinted in Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

As his fame grew he even followed the familiar route of all Hollywood stars by publishing his autobiography entitled Uggie: The Artist: My Story which - with a little human help - explained his rise from humble beginnings to being one of the most recognised canines in the world.

He also made a number of memorable television appearances on programmes such as The Graham Norton Show and Ellen where his lovable antics proved a huge hit with audiences.

Today this message appeared on his Twitter account. Farewell fella.
