Former Hollyoaks actress Stephanie Davis has broken her silence over her axing from the popular soap saying she turned to alcohol to help deal with the pressures of fame.

The 22-year-old star, who played fiery character Sinead O’Connor, was sacked from the Channel 4 show with “immediate effect” after she reportedly turned up to the set under the influence of alcohol.

“I will hold my hands up and admit I’ve been drinking too much. I’ve been struggling for a while and booze was an escape for me," she told The Mirror.

“I usually worked six days a week. My only day off was a Thursday but I went out most Friday and Saturdays.

"Typically I’d share a bottle of prosecco with my friends, then I’d move on to vodka, lime and lemonades. I’d end the night with a few shots of tequila," she added.

However, Davis denied reports that she had turned up to set drunk and claimed it was her choice to exit the show on her terms.

“I had my make-up done then I just said to one of my castmates, I can’t do this.”

“I said I was going to go home. People tried to stop me and warn me about the consequences. But I said, ‘I don’t care’. I just wasn’t thinking straight," she said.

“I want to apologise to the show for how I handled the situation. I was absolutely exhausted.

“Something just clicked inside me and I thought, ‘I can’t do this any more’.

“I think because I played Sinead 24/7, the only time I’d be me is when I was getting into bed."

The actress has been playing character Sinead O’Connor since she was 16 years old and got her big break on BBC talent competition Over the Rainbow in 2010, after appearing in smaller roles on Holby City and Doctors.
