Irish True Detective star Timothy V Murphy and his wife Caitlin Manley are celebrating the birth of their first child.

The couple's son, Sean Fionn Murphy, was born in Los Angeles on Wednesday July 22, weighing 7½ pounds.

In an exclusive interview with US magazine People, the former Glenroe star joked: "As [journalist and humorist] Helen Rowland once said, 'A man's desire for a son is usually nothing but the wish to duplicate himself in order that such a remarkable pattern may not be lost to the world'."

Fifty-five-year-old Murphy, who plays Osip Agranov opposite Colin Farrell in the second season of True Detective, has also starred in Sons of Anarchy and Grace and Frankie

The Tralee native will soon be seen opposite another Irish actor, Brían F O'Byrne, in the historical drama series The Bastard Executioner.
