Diane Keaton is returning to the small screen for the first time in almost a decade to play the part of a nun in new Sky Atlantic drama series The Young Pope.

The 69-year-old Oscar-winner will take on the role of an American nun living in the Vatican City, alongside Jude Law's fictional Pope Pius XIII.

The eight-part drama, which is expected to air in 2016, will focus on the life of Lenny Belardo, an Italian-American who became the leader of the Catholic church.

The Young Pope is Keaton's first regular role on a TV show, and her first job on the small screen since 2006 TV movie Surrender, Dorothy.
