The Godfather star Alex Rocco has died aged 79.

The American actor was best known for playing casino owner and mobster Moe Greene in Francis Ford Coppola's classic 1972 movie, which he said was "without a doubt, my biggest ticket anywhere. I mean that literally."

His daughter Jennifer Rocco announced the news of his passing on Facebook. No further details of his death are known at this time.

Born in 1936 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, his career spanned half a century since he made his acting debut in 1965's Motorpsycho.

After becoming well known for his role in The Godfather, he went on to star in many films and TV shows over the subsequent years, including That Thing You Do!, A Bug's Life, The Wedding Planner, The Simpsons, Family Guy and Episodes.

The US actor was honoured with an Emmy Award in 1990 for his role The Famous Teddy Z.

Rocco is survived by his wife Shannon Wilcox and his children Lucien and Jennifer.
