Sky has cancelled its real-time medical series Critical after just one season.

The drama starred Lennie James as Glen Boyle, the head of a major trauma unit that treated seriously-wounded and critically ill patients.

The show was created by Line of Duty writer Jed Mercurio, with each episode unfolding in real time as Glen Boyle and his team worked relentlessly to save their latest patient.

The UK broadcaster aired 13 episodes of Critical between February and May that attracted a series average of 192,000 viewers in the UK. The show received positive reviews although some doubted its ground-breaking style.

"We are really proud of the acclaim Critical received and its ground-breaking achievements in the production of TV medical drama," Sky1 said in a statement. "We would like to thank Jed Mercurio, the team at Hat Trick Productions and all our cast."
