On its first day of rental release in the US, the Domhnall Gleeson artificial intelligence sci-fi thriller Ex Machina went to the top of the iTunes chart and was also Amazon's home entertainment bestseller.

US industry website Deadline.com says that Ex-Machina is the first indie film since The Imitation Game to take the iTunes number one spot.

Digitally, it has seen off the challenge of studio films like Get Hard, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Home

Already a cult favourite, Ex Machina made $25.3m of its $36.7m at the US box office. Its budget was an estimated $15m.

Earlier this month, US trade daily Variety chose Ex Machina in its round-up of the best films of 2015 to date.

Variety's Scott Foundas said the film, written and directed by Alex Garland, featured "knockout performances from Oscar Isaac, Domhnall Gleeson and Alicia Vikander".

Foundas described Ex Machina as "that rare piece of contemporary sci-fi filmmaking worthy of mention in the same breath as Blade Runner and The Terminator".
