Mike Leigh's acclaimed biopic of the English artist J.M.W. Turner was the UK's most complained about film of 2014, according to the British Board of Film Classification. 12 Years a Slave received the most complaints about a film in Ireland.
The BBC reports that 19 people complained to the BBFC about Timothy Spall "clenching" his buttocks in a scene which shows Turner having sex with his housekeeper.
The BBFC said Turner was given a 12A ratings because of "the lack of nudity, the relative brevity of the scene and its importance in terms of narrative".
In Ireland, 12 Years a Slave was the most complained about film in Ireland last year with four complaints. Nymphomaniac had three complaints, and Dallas Buyers Club had two complaints. 300: Rise of an Empire, Under the Skin, 22 Jump St, The Inbetweeners 2, Gone Girl, A Walk Among the Tombstones, Mr. Turner, and Lets Be Cops all received one complaint each.
The UK most complained about list is different from previous years. Horror and action movies usually attracted the highest number of complaints in the UK and Batman: The Dark Knight, which received over 300 complaints in 2008, is the most complained-about release of recent years.
