A new student bursary in honour of the late journalist and proud Liberties man George Byrne has been announced by Dublin's Liberties Festival.
The George Byrne Bursary was announced at the first day of the annual festival, which runs until Saturday, July 18, and aims to provide financial assistance to students resident in Dublin, particularly those who are pursuing a career in journalism or music.
Byrne, an acclaimed music and entertainment journalist, died on April 2 after a short illness. He had a long career in journalism with Hot Press, the Evening Herald, and the Irish Independent and was also a regular on Irish radio with his singular and uncompromising views.
The Liberties Festival is now in its 45th year and there are over 40 events taking place in and around The Liberties over the next five days. Go to www.libertiesfestivaldublin.com for full details.
