Hilary Duff is a massive fan of Ed Sheeran - even though he made her stay up until the wee hours of the morning to record a song he wrote for her new album, Breathe In, Breathe Out.

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, she said: “I had been picking my own hours when I was recording because I have a baby and everything but [Ed] had a whole day of press scheduled so we could only record at night, and we started around midnight. I was really tired . . . I don’t keep these hours any more!”

The 27-year-old-singer and actress spoke to TEN’s Kayla Walsh about the album, her first in eight years, and explained why she stepped away from music for so long.

“It wasn’t really a conscious decision. I had been working from basically, 11 or 12 years old. I thought I’d been successful and travelled all over and was just ready to chill out and enjoy what I’d worked so hard for and have a little mental break.

“I really enjoyed that. I really just wasn’t writing and I didn’t feel super inspired to start my music career again. Until I did, you know. I think finally just feeling like I’d lived through some stuff and had some things to say, it felt like the right time.”

It has been a turbulent few years for Duff, between the birth of her son Luca and her divorce from retired hockey player Mike Comrie. But the singer seems happy and healthy on the phone, excited about going on tour. Is she hoping to come to Ireland?

“I would love to! I have been before, but for a really short trip. I had a concert there and I really loved it. I’m mostly Irish, on my mother’s side.”
