Former Justified and The Americans' star Margot Martindale is joining US legal drama The Good Wife for the show's seventh season.

Fans of Justified will recall her Emmy Award-winning portrayal of Mags Bennett in the second season of the critically acclaimed drama, and later earned an Emmy nomination for her role as a KGB agent in The Americans.

In The Good Wife Martindale - widely regarded as one of the greatest character actors of her generation - will have a recurring role as a top political operative named Willa Eastman, who's known for her folksy charm.

According to the show's producers Robert and Michelle King, Willa Eastman will make an immediate impact by going into a battle of words and wits with political strategist Eli Gold, who's played by Alan Cumming.

"[Margo's] ability to mix comedy and drama is unparalleled," the Kings said in a statement. "And we can't wait to see how Margo and Alan deal with each other."

Martindale will be debuting in The Good Wife with former Grey's Anatomy star Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who is joining the cast as a private investigator.

The Good Wife season six continues on Tuesday nights on RTÉ One.
