Scottish actor Richard Wilson, who's 79 today, is best known for his role as Victor Meldrew in the legendary BBC sitcom, One Foot in the Grave, starring alongside Annette Crosbie as the ultimate grumpy old man.
The show ran for six seasons, and there were also seven Christmas specials and two Comic Relief sketches, over an eleven-year period, from early 1990 to late 2000.
One Foot in the Grave was occasionally the subject of controversy as a result of its darker story elements, but also won several awards, including the 1992 BAFTA for Best Comedy. In 2004, it came tenth in a BBC poll to determine Britain's Best Sitcom.
Wilson's other television shows include Born and Bred and Britain's Best Drives and more recently he played Gaius the court physician in the BBC drama, Merlin.
