Diana Douglas, the first wife of Kirk Douglas and the mother of Michael Douglas, has died aged 92. Douglas appeared opposite Steve Martin in film Planes, Trains and Automobiles and she also had roles in TV shows such as DallasER, and The West Wing.

According to an obituary from Michael Douglas’s production company, Further Films, Diana died of cancer at a motion picture industry retirement home in LA.

She was born Diana Love Dill in Bermuda and moved to New York to study at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. In May 1943, she was working as a model and was the cover star of Life magazine.

According to her obituary, "Kirk Douglas, by then serving in the Navy during World War II, saw her on the cover and told his shipmates he would marry her."

The couple wed in November of that year and had two sons, Michael and Joel, before divorcing in 1951.

She remained on good terms with Kirk and starred alongside him in a number of films, including her last, 2003's It Runs In The Family, which starred Kirk, Michael, and Diana's grandson, Cameron.
