James Horner, the double Oscar-winning composer whose scores included Titanic, A Beautiful Mind and Field of Dreams, has died in an air crash in California. He was 61. 

The Hollywood Reporter says that Horner was flying a small aircraft when it crashed 60 miles north of Santa Barbara. 

Writing on Facebook, his assistant, Sylvia Patrycja, said: "We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart and unbelievable talent."

She continued: "He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road."

Horner won the Oscar for Best Original Score for his work on Titanic and shared the Academy Award for Best Original Song with lyricist Will Jennings for My Heart Will Go On from the film. 

He also worked with Titanic director James Cameron on Aliens and Avatar and was reported to be working with the filmmaker on the sequels to Avatar

In his career, Horner received 10 Oscar nominations and his other credits included: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, An American Tail, Glory, Braveheart, Apollo 13, House of Sand and Fog, The Amazing Spider-Man and the upcoming Gabriel Byrne-starring Chilean miners film The 33
