Transgender play for Galway Arts Festival

Amy Conroy

In Amy Conroy’s new play, Luck Just Kissed You Hello, Laura returns home for the death of her father, but Laura is now Mark.

Amy Conroy’s witty exploration of masculinity sees Mark defend his new life to those who know him best, his twin brother Gary and old friend Sullivan. He also has to face what it means to be himself in all the complexity that entails.

The playwright and actress has worked with Transgender Equality Network Ireland (TENI), to investigate gender fluidity and masculinity.

“I feel it is important for the play to convey the uncertainty felt by many men,” says Conroy of her 90-minute work. “Yet I also wanted to acknowledge the great beauty in so many traditional masculine traits. To examine what it feels like to be a man, but also what it feels like to be a man deemed not masculine enough, or indeed a female deemed too masculine.”

Starring Amy Conroy, Mark Fitzgerald and Will O'Connell, directed by Caitriona McLaughlin. 8pm nightly, Mick Lally Theatre, Galway.

Matinees 18 & 25 July 3pm, previews July 9-12, opens 13 July. No shows July 14 & 19. Tickets €18–€20
