Ahead of Iona's world premiere as the closing film at this year's Edinburgh International Film Festival, distributor Verve has acquired the UK rights to the Ruth Negga-starring island drama.

Directed by Scott Graham, Iona is described as "part coming-of-age story and part returning-home drama" and follows the titular character (Negga) as she returns to her birthplace namesake with her son to seek refuge from a violent crime in Glasgow.

ScreenDaily.com reports that the film was shot entirely on location in Scotland and also stars Tom Brooke (The Boat That Rocked), Michelle Duncan (Atonement) and newcomers Ben Gallagher and Sorcha Groundsell.

There are no details of an Irish release at present.
